A Significant Milestone as Liam Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"Rosenior represents a top manager who knows the game intimately, and that's what matters most.

"But, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage player, it would be dishonest to claim this appointment doesn't move me."

Those are the words expressed by Paul Canoville, who made his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team off the bench in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club appointed Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next head coach after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls the London club.

There have been a mere twelve of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including individuals holding interim positions – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is he grew up and played not far from here, he knows this community," added Canoville.

"When children see a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, a person they can identify with, who's from their ends, who comes from a family that champions what's right… that's profound and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, it is an enormous step for the club, for the capital, for all young person with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Do the Statistics Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's inaugural African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black manager in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of managers of colour across English football corresponds with an absence of diversity at executive level.

According to the BFP 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, research by the equality organization revealed just 3.2% of board and senior leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse communities.

At first-team coaching positions, according to figures from eleven clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching roles – encompassing senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as a the Chelsea manager, and we want to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability present within ethnic minority groups... they desire the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to persist in work hard to dismantle those obstacles down."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become the fourth full-time English managers currently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's remaining major leagues in terms of national managers.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight coaches in Italy are Italian, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany while 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every aspiring British coaches from an academy background will be, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is truly inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness someone land that job with that profile and we hope he does really well."

It is vital to remember – he's there on merit'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for the likes of West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a five-month stint at the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services in combating discrimination in football and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began writing articles for The Guardian, and in one piece he addressed the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not influence coaching skill and said roles should be given on merit.

He also made a point he has often stated: how vast under-representation results in misunderstandings regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" or "emotional", but said he could relate to the Netherlands player of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to join him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" to hear a coach utter a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and authored a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "blatant" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted the top flight's first black manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
