As per a new book, though, that title should go to a mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel required around ten lumberjacks laboring for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical cutter, that converted logs into boards using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could build vessels faster compared to anyone else, which sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic supremacy across Europe and the world.
