In a show of camaraderie that transcends the fierce Ashes rivalry, Travis Head has revealed he sent a private message of support to England's Ben Duckett.
The gesture came after Duckett faced a significant criticism on social media.
Unverified Footage Ignited Controversy
The situation began when unconfirmed video clips circulated online.
These clips appeared to show Duckett, seemingly intoxicated, in a tetchy conversation with a fan.
This took place during the team's time off in Noosa, unexpectedly placing the opener in an unwanted spotlight.
Team Officials Commented on Behaviour
Just hours before, England's managing director, Rob Key, had spoken out.
He called heavy alcohol consumption "totally inappropriate" and confirmed he would be investigating reports from the trip.
“I get along with Ducky well, I reached out to him to see if he was going alright,” Head stated.
He said this at the MCG following England's quick win in the Melbourne Test.
An Appeal for Understanding
Head emphasized the human element of the situation. "Cricketers are people too. What you do in personal time is up to you."
He noted the public scrutiny of their lives but felt the reaction was "over the top."
"It was blown out of all proportion," Head added. "I reckon it was an England fan."
Sharing his perspective, the Australian batter said, "It wasn't a genuine problem in my opinion."
He speculated that "When there’s big gaps in Tests, people have got to find something to talk about."
Support from the Captain
Prior to this, England captain Ben Stokes had publicly defended Duckett.
In an emotive press conference before the fourth Test, Stokes called for "empathy" towards his teammate.
Moving Forward
During the match, Duckett scored 34 crucial runs in England's successful chase of 175.
After the match, he shared online, writing, "A fantastic finish to a very difficult week."
Head expressed hope for longer cricket in the next Test, joking, "Maybe if the game lasts longer, there will be fewer off-field stories."
