Crew Member Reveals Depression After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen â known as a researcher and activist â was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
âI said the emotional pain might endure for years,â the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
âStuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,â she revealed. âWeeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.â
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts â including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background â was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. âYou were my salvation,â she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a Amazon founder.
