France to begin stopping small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to start intercepting small boats in the English Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
