The Princess of Wales's Yearly Festive Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The sizable congregation will listen to a mix of carols, music and readings from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The focus of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The princess has been making her own steady comeback to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the trust, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at the concert.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.

Generations Gathering

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for local food charities.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
