During a recent discussion, Donald Trump suggested he could withdraw from backing Kyiv while intensifying his administration's sharp critique of Europe, labeling it as "feeble" and "decaying" and asserting it was "self-destructing" through migration policies.
An Unfocused Interview Full of Misstatements and Recurring Grievances
During the often halting interview, the American leader struggled to name any cities in Ukraine except for Kyiv, misrepresented elements of the conflict's trajectory, and recycled far-right tropes about European immigration that echoed unfounded claims.
He called for Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept a plan to cede territory to Russia, arguing that Moscow held the "upper hand" and that Kyiv must "play ball."
"I won't rule in or out. That's not for discussion," Trump said regarding potential military strategy, also refusing to exclude sending American troops into Venezuela.
Europe's 'Cultural Decline' Described in Racial Terms
Trump kept coming back to framing what he called Europe's problems in explicitly ethnic language, labeling some politicians on the continent "real stupid."
"Should this continue the way it's going, Europe won't remain... several nations will not be viable as they are. Their approach to migration is a disaster. Their actions with immigration is a disaster," he claimed.
This view came after the publication of a recent American strategy document that stated Europe faced "cultural obliteration" because of mass migration, providing implicit backing for nationalist movements.
EU Pushback: "Stay Out"
Reacting, EU leader António Costa said the implication that Washington would back Europe's right-wing groups was unacceptable, adding: "What we cannot accept is the prospect to interfere in the EU's democratic processes."
Focus on London and Paris and Sadiq Khan
Discussing shifts he said were occurring in major metropolitan areas like London and Paris, Trump made clear that the problem, as he viewed it, was that they were changing demographically. He again singled out London's mayor, London's first Muslim mayor.
"The continent is... if you take a look at Paris, it has changed dramatically. I loved Paris. It's a much different place. Observe London, there is Mayor Khan. He is terrible. He's an incompetent mayor, and is a vile leader. In my view he's done a terrible job," Trump remarked.
He further claimed that immigrants were "entering from all parts of the world. Including from the Middle East, they arrive from the Congo, tremendous numbers of people originating in the Congo."
Future of the Transatlantic Alliance
When asked if the trajectory meant European countries would no longer be US allies, Trump replied: "Or they'll be... well, it depends. Their beliefs will shift, of course, since the people coming in have a totally different ideology. This will render them much weaker. They will become... significantly diminished."
Although he claimed he had no specific vision for Europe, Trump agreed he had "supported figures that many Europeans disapprove of," including the Hungarian premier.
"I have no vision for Europe. My only desire is to witness a robust continent. Look, my focus is on America First. It's 'MAGA,'" he stated. "People say I am a keen observer. I have eyes. I hear. I have knowledge. The situation is clear. I get reports the public doesn't. And I think it's tragic what is occurring to Europe."
