White House Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to execute staff reductions.

An analysis argued that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
