Worldwide Clean Power Generation Exceeds Coal for the First Time

This historic milestone, global solar and wind installations produced greater power than coal plants in an unprecedented shift in 2025, marking a turning point for the global power sector.

Clean Energy Outpace Power Needs

An in-depth study found that during the initial half of 2025, clean power outpaced the increasing global demand for power, causing a small decline in fossil fuel consumption.

Globally produced almost a third additional solar energy in the initial six months of the year compared with the equivalent timeframe in 2024, satisfying over four-fifths of the worldwide rise in power needs. Wind power grew by just over 7%, enabling clean sources to displace traditional energy in a historic first.

Wind and solar are now growing fast enough to meet the global increasing appetite for electricity,” stated an expert energy specialist. “This marks the start of a shift where clean power is keeping pace with rising needs.”

Regional Impacts and Differences

India and China were largely responsible for the surge in renewables, as per the analysis, unlike the United States and European Union, which relied more heavily on fossil fuels.

  • The Asian giant added greater clean power generation than the rest of the world combined, resulting in a two percent drop in its use of fossil fuels in the first half of the period.
  • The South Asian nation grew its renewable energy by over triple its electricity demand – being much lower this year – causing its fossil fuel use to drop by three point one percent and 34% each.

By contrast, demand for electricity in the US exceeded its expanding renewables sector, causing a seventeen percent rise in coal generation over the initial six months of the period.

Across Europe, demand exhibited limited growth compared with the first half of last year, but a weather-related decline in wind and hydro energy meant that even rapidly growing solar energy was unable to stop fossil fuel production rising by 14% and 1.1% respectively.

Future Expansion and Developments

Another report projected that global clean energy could more than double by the close of 2030, with 80% of additional renewable power expected to originate from solar energy.

“The growth in worldwide clean energy capacity in the coming years will be led by solar PV – but with hydropower, wind, bioenergy and geothermal each playing a part, as well,” commented a leading energy expert.

The report emphasized that China would remain the largest global expanding sector for renewables, with The Republic of India arising as the next biggest throughout the decade.

Alongside growth in established markets, photovoltaic energy is poised to surge in economies including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and several south-east Asian countries,” the authority noted.
